Yeah, but the 'oohs' in The Miracle sort of feel like an uplifting chant that worked because it was the opener - when the band mentioned it wasn't always going to be the first track I was stunned because... Where else would it go? With a beginning like that?

On GOOYOW, the oohs really do just feel like they just needed to stick something else in, and couldn't get it to flow.
Yeah, I actually love the ooohs in Miracle, nothing wrong with that.

  2. Ok, just to make it clear, my problem with the song is that a distorted version of it it's stuck in my head (I haven't heard it in the last couple of days so it's like my mind is trying to sing it but my mind has a terrible voice).
It annoyingly pops up randomly at all times during the day.

So my only beef with this song is that is too catchy and that my mind sings it as good as Bono sang twilight in the early days. Other than that, I hope that next time I hear it, I'll still love it like a couple of days ago
  3. I think I consider GOOYOW a 7/10 song, i think it’s good, better than decent but not great. I get some of the criticisms aimed at it, it’s one of they songs I do think sounds better on the first few listens but to me it went from being great to being good. It’s not ground breaking or anything but I think it does it’s job.
  4. Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say while I'm not super impressed so far by SoE, its not heartbreakingly bad like SoI was at times. The Miracle of Joey Ramone starts off the album by trying to praise a Punk icon while sounding the least punk this band has in their entire career. Song for Someone is easily the weaker cousin of Best Thing About Me. These songs might be a little too pleasant, but it sounds modern, doesn't offend my sensibilities, and lyrics are only minimally cringe-worthy.

Why does a song praising a punk icon have to be a punk song?

And I disagree about Song for Someone vs Best Thing. One of them is a slow acoustic song, the other is a grandiose, bubble gum pop song. They might be about the same thing, but SFS is a lot more nuanced than Best Thing in its lyrics. Less catchy though? Definitely.

I'm not a huge fan of Song for Someone, in fact it only really came a live for me with the visuals and introduction within the I&E show, otherwise I find it fine, but not amazing - that being said though, I don't think it was really aiming nearly as high as The Best Thing was. I don't think SFS is meant to be a huge pop hit, it's meant to be a quiet love song, and it succeeds. Best Thing doesn't succeed at being a huge pop hit, and it sort of falls somewhere between meh-U2 song and bad hit single.

It's part of the reason I think they should've somehow paid Kygo to be credited as producer and just put the Kygo/U2 version out as their own version, as the first single. If U2 want to make a dancey, hit single, go all the way. Don't half-ass it and put out some rocky version of an obvious pop song, put out a fuckin' pop song. That Kygo version succeeds at doing what U2's version didn't.

I like the U2 version, but I agree with your point - U2 have ALWAYS had pop sensibilities (kind of why they faced criticism for their early post-punk albums, people said they 'weren't punk enough'), just sometimes they're scared to embrace them and we end up in a weird middle ground between U2-y new wave alt rock and a sort of 'alt pop' type thing.

City of Blinding Lights, the album version of I'll Go Crazy, and most of ATYCLB, for better or for worse, either readily manage to infuse pop into a rock song, or embrace the pop aspect quite readily. The Best Thing, while nice enough, does feel like they wanted something more poppy, then hedged at the last minute and drizzled light alt rock over it, which makes it feel a bit sloppy, which is something U2 rarely ever are.
  7. Still waiting for the climax

  8. This is a pretty awesome cover from a U2 tribute band Achtung Babies

    Agreed.

I really like the live version from MTV EMA
  11. Yeah I mentioned on that thread that i now regard it an 8 again. Thought they performed great as a unit, and that all 4 band members were confident and comfortable in the song. I also liked the little change at the end of the first chorus where instead of singing ‘your fight, your fight’ bono sang just one ‘your fight’ then into ‘so fight back’ changed the link into the second chorus just slightly but there was almost a bit of a pause in there and then the visuals with Adam looking so confident on the bass at that point then Bono walking down the extended stage full of confidence and purpose i was really pleased with the performance.
