I like the song, but it really lacks a catchy and memorable chorus to be a missed single.

I’m somewhere in the middle but more towards liking the song. I think there’s plenty on the album that are as good as Crystal ballroom but for me it would definitely be a better album with it on it. I was thinking about this recently in fact and if Lucifers hands and crystal ballroom replaced sleep like a baby tonight and either the miracle or volcano (Can’t decide which one as I rate them both 6/10) then SOI would probably be my 3rd favourite album. It’s a solidly very good album in my book and in hindsight features most of the things I want in a u2 album.
  3. Crystal Ballroom and Lucifer's Hands are both superior to The Miracle.

However, it could be a minor turning point - if reception is lukewarm, or contained to certain quarters, they might reevaluate their approach to albums. I remember back in 2014 or 15 Adam mentioned that after SOE, the band might want to make a different kind of albums - albums more targeted to their fanbase, perhaps more experimental records. I think it's feasible for SOE to be the turning point like that. U2 will make Big Music, but it mightn't always be the same Big Music - the experimental tracks on NLOTH (Moment of Surrender, Unknown Caller, Cedars, title track, Fez, White As Snow) are all still big, U2-y songs in totality, but they don't feel like typical big U2 songs, ESPECIALLY from the preceding two (and to an extent, following) albums. Maybe that's a direction that this album may make them consider more.

Not to be THAT guy, but do you happen to have a source on that? I feel as though that would've made some pretty big waves around here and I have no recollection of that being said.

iirc, I've seen that quote in the "what they said" section of the board (not sure if SOE is mentioned in the quote).

But they've said way too many things, so I don't think we should put too much weight on it...

I am huge on Breathe, Crystal Ballroom to me was better than anything on Songs of Boring, I mean Innocence, except maybe California(after the intro, that is). I still think SOE will be better than SOI. If not, than SOE will be their new "worst" album for me, pushing October further up on the list, but October has a soft spot in my heart, as I understand they were finding their sound at the time, now they are chasing hits, trying to stay relevant, and massage their own egos. Funny how my favorite U2 songs of the last few years are all on the deluxe version or other castoffs: Every Breaking Wave (acoustic version 100x better than crap album version), Crystal Ballroom, Lucifer's Hands, Ordinary Love, and then California fits somewhere in there, but its the only song on SOI that I am huge on...but Volcano and This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now are ok. And despite my lukewarm reception to SOI, U2 are my favorite living act still releasing new music, so I will hope for the best album, and be happy with whatever they give me. My money has helped give them a great life, and their music has helped me have the joy to rationalize giving them the great life

Take it for what it is... but a lot of these tracks have been discussed in one way or another, I would expect a 12" release along with a Deluxe CD version with bonus tracks and alternate takes.

    North Star! Nice
  8. Landlady
  9. I don't think I have looked forward to a U2 album less than I am to SOE....happy to be proved wrong obviously

Stop helping God across the road like a little landlady

    Mmm seems familiar
