Comments:
This is a modified (and greatly improved) version of a file set I shared about a week ago, courtesy of DATFLY's hard work. As noted in the original torrent, Hobbes4444 made a good recording that was unfortunately marred by a neighbor who would periodically (and sometimes at inappropriate times) burst into furious clapping for 10 seconds at a time throughout the course of the show. DATFLY applied a "de-clapping" function to the recording and almost completely removed the claps -- the first two samples in the comments illustrate a before/after comparison of one of the clappiest section, and the results are amazing. Adobe was able to remove the bursts without compromising the sound. Magic.
While I was at it, I went back and raised the levels of tracks 8, 12, and 18-20 to bring the volume more into line with the rest of the recording. If you downloaded the original torrent and enjoyed it (or if you didn't because of the clapping), you should definitely consider grabbing this upgrade.
Note: This particular torrent is a 16/44.1 file set, which can be burned directly to CD. A 24-bit, higher-fidelity version has been posted separately. The recording is seamless; the disc breaks above are merely a suggestion.
Posting this at the request of the well-known Boston taper "Hobbes4444" -- though I prepped this file for upload, the thanks should really go to him for his generosity in sharing this recording and his speed in passing it along. This is a worthy addition to his body of work over the years, and I appreciate him making this one available to U2 fans around the world so quickly.
The first of four nights in Boston; featuring a strong setlist and a very vocal audience. The show featured several lesser-played songs that in prior residencies had only appeared in later sets -- for example, "Bad" and "40" both pop up in this setlist, making me wonder what's in store for the later shows. Great, passionate performance by a band who clearly loves playing in Boston. Bono calls out their former tour manager at the end of the show and closes with "40" -- which was not planned on the original setlist. As a result, I think this is one of the longer shows of the tour so far.
Recording quality is quite good -- great dynamics and prominent vocals, as well as an overall good mix. The clap-killing made this into a really good recording.
A note to tapers: If you can find a good club or front-balcony seat beside the stage, that is probably the best location for taping this show. The GA section has speakers that are almost directly overhead; on one hand, it's good because there are speakers all the way to the back of the arena as opposed to over the stage, but on the other, the sound is coming directly down on you as opposed to in front of you. It's a bit tricky to record. Stealth tapers with cards on the floor will need to orient their microphones almost directly upward to get a good line on the sound ... and even then, it's tough. Omnis might be the best bet from the floor. I had my best luck with my cards on the club level.
Many thanks, again, to Hobbes4444 for passing this one along, and to DATFLY for his post-production efforts. Mp3 samples are included in the comments.
