1. Ah, that's for sure. Fixed length lenses usually hav emore aperture and are the best on their focal lenght - it is surely a great lens to own. Just not for concerts Which I thought was your initial enquiry (but now that I re-read I see not, I must have made that up due to Remy's mention).
  2. I do think it could work for gigs as well. I'll try it out
  3. Considering you have another lens next to that and you can switch up.
And considering you probably like a good closeup. I think any fixed focal lenght lenseis a very nice edition to your kit

I have a 135 mm fixed and its my favourite lense. Ideal for atmospheric closeups, even some macro, and amazing sports and gig photography.

I usually carry one wide , one zoom if seriously I shoot a gig... Is I where to add a third it be a pancake or fisheye.
  4. Agreed. I'm after fixed 135mm lenses since a couple of days ago! I lost bids on two of them over at ebay last night, I was pissed

Concert photography is a different animal to all other kinds of photography. Obviously aperture plays a big role (as in all photography), but also do position and autofocus speed and accuracy. And in my opinion (and I take photos of concert as a semi-professional hobby, or unpaid job if you look at it that way) fixed lenses are not very useful since you can't really move around during concerts - and that is what a fixed lens needs: movement, movement, movement. As the saying goes, fixed lenses make you grow a better photographer... and go slimmer

That is just my $0'02 though, and of course someone might find his 35/50/60/80/135 mm fixed lens the best possible weapon to immortalize live shows - all the better for them!

PS. Another small nuance for concert photography is that besides photos I usually take videos, and what is a video without a proper zoom on Edge during the guitar solo?
  5. I'm confident I could get some good shots with it. I'm not really looking to take wide angle/whole stage kinda photos. I won't be able to move around, that's true. I'll have to rely on the artist coming around... and then be quick about it

I'll surely come back here and share the results! good or bad

re videos: my little panasonic is still my go to camera for videos! I'll have that one with me anyway as a decoy for the security
  6. I love the waiting game and composing with fixed lenses. Even if you can't move around. It forces me to look at the lighting or forces me to frame my fixtures in an expectant way. I truly love it.

And In U2's case, they have a hue stage and move around quite a lot compared to lets say. Noel Gallagher :') So you'll end up with a lot of variety anyway.

I can't waaaaait for the upcoming U2 gigs and I hope I get my camera in But I'm pretty confident now that mirrorless cams are so small.

ah, that's a different thing, if you have another camera for videos AND you'll be up close and don't really care about wide angle, screen-capturing shots, then go for it I'm sure you'll get some incredible shots - if they're anywhere close Remy's last set then we'll be mindblown

Which camera do you currently own? A 135 lens is always huge regardless the system or brand so I hope you don't get trouble trying to get that one into the stadium...

LOL that's a very high goal! remy's photos are mindblowing but yeah, for me, getting one shot that's 1/100 as good as his and I'll be happy! setting low expectations here and then move my way up

I ignored everyone's advice to get a Fuji XT1 / XT2 and got myself a Canon M5 mirrorless, which is their first noteworthy try at a mirrorless. And I'm over the moon with it.

The 135 mm needs to be put on with an adapter as well, so its hilariously big.
I'm not gonna take it with me at every U2 gig. Just gonna see how security is on the day itself. Glad I'm not going to the UK since that's a security disaster right now.

If you are getting one I think you'll be very happy with it.
  11. We'll be happy to get maybe 1 decent pic like Remy's

I'm a Nikon guy, and I think I seriously have to stop already... D5100, D3300, 1 V1, Coolpix P7100. My girl is starting to hate cameras and lenses more than guitars (and that is saying a lot) Thanks for the advice though! I'm not fan of Fujis so I understand why you did that

I got a Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 the other day (very cheap due to an issue with its AF) and it's actually pretty impressive. Accurate focus, superb bokeh, close focus (almost macro) and very sharp even wide open... Great overall and for the price it's probably the best lens I have as of now - it has the versatility of a medium range zoom plus the aperture of a fixed lens. It costs 400€ new though (got it for almost 7 times less).
