  2. NOTES on 1983-07-03 Werchter, Belgium - Festival Grounds.

For some reason the Werchter '83 concert has always been a sort of mess in our database. Unnoticed, perhaps, but the 5-star entry with no other header than FM Aerial Broadcast" had in fact two links with two different sources. One containing rather poor mp3's from an original broadcast at an incorrect speed, while the other had the 2007 re-broadcast captured by RickU2.

Then some three years ago, just before I was promoted to u2start mod, I shared my "repaired" original broadcast compiled from various sources. On the review page I already left a note that it had an annoying hum, as to be found in the transfer by Eric Naulaerts.

Recently Hoserama taught me how I can use the De-Hum from the incredible iZotope RX05, but then close inspection of my repaired version (which mainly consists in a pitch correction of that original broadcast) learned that the various sources used all had different kind of hums.

Meanwhile I had already discovered a new source in mono having both the original broadcasts, with the first part in nice consistent quality. Better than the first part of the Eric Naulaerts tape, but worse than the second part (starting with "Surrender").

All things considered, I decided to started out from scratch again and make a new "repaired" version that had the hum removed and all tracks separately speed corrected by comparing each track with the 2007 re-broadcast (Radio 2, The Netherlands).

It's still not perfect. The Werchter 1983 show was recorded in 1983 by the Dutch radio station KRO and broadcasted in two parts. For some reason the first part has never been shared in proper (stereo) quality and the radio DJ hosting the broadcast back then thought it was a good idea to make short statements now and then saying that it is a recording made by them. Probably with the idea to prevent bootleggers from bootlegging this show.

Of course, the 2007 re-broadcast is a good alternative. It has no "bootleg" warning, but it is missing the beautiful Surrender and the closing "40" with Annie Lennox. It is also severely compressed making it sound quite lossy. Like I said before, it is great in the car, but I personally prefer the original broadcast on the headphones.
  3. MORE UPDATES in the ongoing AchtungBootlegs transfer project:

1987-04-21 Los Angeles CA - Sports Arena (4th night):
    - update consist merely in adding the known sources. The CD-R bootleg "4th Night" is OK, but since JEMS has announced a fresh transfer from the KeithM master tapes, it is likely going to make this "4th Night" obsolete. Although this 4th Night bootleg has circulated with unknown lineage, my money is on this being actually originated from an early transfer of the KeithM recording.
(And as one can see, the show page is already prepared to welcome the KeithM master )

    1987-05-02 Worcester MA - Centrum (1st night):
    - added the lossless files (flac) of the Steve 'Rasta' Cahill source.
I have no idea where the "Rasta" came from, but it was already like this in our database, so I left it like that. I mean, it is a pretty cool name for a taper, not? (#jahisnotdead)

    1987-05-03 Worcester MA - Centrum (2nd night):
This is actually one of the most intriguing entries I have come across in the last months...

I have found three distinctly different sources, one of which extant in two transfers (with both transfers having speed/pitch issues).

[Source 1] These are the Danafletch UAG "Sony TCKE5000s 3 head deck line out" transfer, and the "JEMS fixed" version ("likely 2nd Gen"). However, JEMS has only fixed the speed issue partially. Quoting BK for JEMS: " [a] non-linear speed issues, meaning that as the show goes on, the speed gets slower." (A solution for this would be to go through this show, indeed, track by track and taking either the second or the third source as a reference).

[Source 2] This show may also be known under the title "Ever Peaceful." A bit confusing, in my opinion, since there is the more famous "Ever Peaceful" Worcester bootleg from April 18, 1985 (a bootleg that I hope to share shortly in a meticulously cleaned-up version )

Anyway, although I have found no lossless counterpart for this show, I do think this particular source is the best sounding of the three. Although the balance (azimuth) is a bit off and it's a bit thin sounding in the low (+ WOWY is cut and, strangely enough, RTSS is in two parts with nothing really missing - I left it like this in case someone recognizes this and has a lossless version of this particular source).
Still there is an update, since we had rather poor 128kb/s mp3's up, but since my own archive had in fact 192kb/s mp3's, these are up now (the difference is quite noticeable, although trained ears can still detect a bit of low-res)

[Source 3] known as "1st Gen Analog-Tape" is not only the worse sounding of them all, but besides "40" it also has Pride and WOWY missing.

Ha! Somewhat sooner than I expected, but JEMS already shared the fresh transfer of the Keith M master
of the "1987-04-21 Los Angeles CA - Sports Arena (4th night)" today

As I suspected, this proves indeed to be the master underneath the "4th Night" bootleg and,
I dare to say, this is a fantastic upgrade

What a difference a few generations can make! (Sorry if I just copy my remarks as given on U2torrents a few moments an hour ago )

And as JEMS - or rather Butterking for JEMS - already mentioned in the accompanying info file, this 4th Los Angeles show is a somewhat forgotten show from the legendary first leg of the original Joshua Tree Tour.
But I think it is special just for being so ordinary and without pretense. This is still the sort of innocent U2 that doesn't know its full potential yet.

A sort of in between show: in between the fantastic previous show with Bob Dylan on stage, and the outstanding show the following day to close the 5 night stand at the legendary Sports Arena. But by being "in between," it is also a sort of welcome moment of relieve for the band not having to live up to the highest standards which they always have sought for themselves.

This 4th night seems to have played itself - giving U2 a sort of unique calmness towards their own being as a band. I think the right word I'm searching for is "unforced." And so is the recording. It all sounds so pure that you almost forget that you are listening to a recording: it just takes you there. Both performance and capture are in a wonderful harmony and that is just pure bliss!

Perhaps I make it sound as if it is all perfect without any flaws, but given the crispness of sound coming from a 30+ year old tape, it is quite amazing and a very welcome listen

Upgrade sounds fantastic ! I was at this show ! So Many Thankyou's

  6. U2 idem Amsterdam
  7. Think this one is from the Xavel label and not the Rattle Snake one as on the show pages
  8. Updated some Elevation shows today:
    2001-04-15 Portland OR,
    2001-04-17 San Diego CA
and both the San Jose CA concerts (April 19 & 20)

I always had a weak spot for the Portland show, but the 2001-04-20 San Jose show is truely something else. Allegedly Bono afterwards declared it to be the "best show ever" - for what ever that means of course, but it was indeed pretty special with the debut of Kite + the tour (and American!) debut of Stay (Faraway, So Close!)

And from this second San Jose show, there is truely something for everyone:
    a soundcheck,
    an iem recording
    plus two great audience sources
  9. Some more updates on the first leg of the 360 tour today.

Credit to LosslessJoel who started to help me with adding info files of sources that are not yet in our database

And it sort of triggered me to review my own sources and see what is up on the site.

For 2009-07-11 Paris, France there are many sources, but most, I think, are rather mediocre. I do admid that I'm not familiar with the NONOballoo and p62dok recordings, so I might be missing out on something

At least one exception, however, is the recording by Julien & Amande. Some time ago Julien said it was OK to add his (and affiliated!) sources to the site (lossless only), so I'm happy to take up on that now!

It is truely a great recording with nice clarity and what seems at first glance very little intrusive audience noises. Surely a 4 star recording

For the second, 2009-07-12 Paris, show I thought the LDB source was amongst the best so I added both flac and mp3 for that one.

Lastly, and this time I'm afraid, leastly as well, I added the Pikifou source for 2009-07-15 Nice, France.
Not much recordings of this show in Nice seem to have surfaced. In fact, next to this Pikifou recording there is only the recording by wwrywwry known to be around. Anyway, both are now availlable (Pikifou has flac+mp3).

    Enjoy
