1. Obsessive me has been compiling all the shows and songs in an excel file for reasons, but I've found a lot of inconsistencies between the U2start database with U2gigs... (I'm talking about the 70's shows right now, didn't reach the 80's)

There's many shows listed on u2gigs but not in here, as well several shows with the dates wrong.

Just as an example of what I'm saying, 1978-03-16 is, according to U2gigs, 1978-03-17 (there's more, right now I just gave it a quick look to find one ---and the next one on the 17, is on the 18 according to u2gigs).
(For missing shows, immediately you can see that u2gigs list a show on the 15, missing in here).

Not sure if there's a reasoning for this (like "we have a different source for those shows, and we think we have the right dates") or if it's just a mistake.

    Cheers!
  2. Probably because nobody bothered to keep a record of the very early stuff, as most of it was supporting or one off small gigs with no official publicity
  3. Whilst I can't speak for any problems there may or may not be with dates in the U2Start database, I would say that the early years are tough to 100% accurately document for all kinds of reasons, especially those where no recordings exist. I've had the same experience with another live act from the last 40 years.

It's likely that many of those documented early dates and any information relating to the gigs themselves have been acquired by multiple people from a multitude of sources down the years - be it attendees, books, music media press advertisements for gigs, or perhaps from tape trading lists / cassette inlays where recordings exist or peoples memory etc., and they can end up wrong for all kinds of reasons be it typos, cancelled/postponed gigs, bad handwriting, chinese whispers etc. etc.

With a band as big as U2 who have played as many shows as they have, there will be a lot of people who have documented and made notes down the years and there's bound to be some inconsistencies.

I would imagine though once you get to the War tour onwards, there shouldn't be too many hiccups.
  4. Thanks for reporting! Our database should be in sync with U2gigs so I’ll correct some things based on your findings.

Lol have had to look that one up, I assume you mean Dougie MacLean right? Nice song indeed. Thought it might have been from the BB King song of a similar name. Assuming that's what you meant or perhaps I have my very own personal internet stalker lol!

The other band is Simple Minds. I maintained a SM website in the early days of the internet focussing on their live career, concerts, setlists, reviews that kind of thing, and was intending on expanding it to cover U2 ultimately as well.

Then at the turn of the millennium, I lost pretty much my entire SM/U2 audio collection in a flood, I had pretty much everything in circulation as far as SM goes, plus lots of rare and low-gen and off the master stuff too, plus a lot of U2 material too. I was quite downbeat about losing it all and ended up shelving the website and the future one I was working on.

Really have to admire and respect what Remy and everyone else has done here with U2Start, the amount of work that goes into this stuff shouldn't be underestimated.

Yes, thanks, I get all of that, it's just that this database should be based on the u2gigs one, so when they didn't match, it was likely a mistake/bug.

(Also I've been obsessed by those early years for the last couple of weeks, I'd be interested in a Early Years doctorate or something like that, so War seems to far away right now )

    Nice!

On a sidenote, I often notice missing snippets on U2Gigs, I occasionally email them and let them know but they never seem to get updated for whatever reason.

Examples off the top of my head...

2001-07-28-Glasgow - Bono (I believe) acoustically jams a short snippet of Simple Minds' 'Waterfront' prior to 'Kite'.
2005-06-14-Manchester - 'Vertigo' has a snippet of The Fall's 'Totally Wired'.
2017-07-30-Amsterdam - 'Vertigo' has two snippets of Gary Glitter's 'Rock And Roll Part 2' at the beginning and end of the song.

It's a pity these things are not getting documented.

You can also send them to me if you don't get a reply (remy [at] u2start.com), I'll make sure they get added then (to both U2gigs and here). I'll forward these ones along

No, I definitely meant the song! I used to live in Scotland. Brilliant song.

Agree re: u2start. It is a fantastic resource for fans and everyone involved are heroes of mine, a term I don't use lightly. U2songs is another mine of info.

Simple Minds ploughed a very similar furrow to U2 for a long time and are a favourite band in this house. What a shame about losing all that stuff. If it happened to my u2 stuff I think I'd have to go live in a cave for a while.

I think I pretty much did live in a cave for awhile - it was a dark time for sure, but at the end of the day its just stuff, and places like this and dime, TTD, U2T have more than made up for anything lost - U2 wise at least.
