1. Is it common that the sound quality of a bootleg varies (without being mentioned in the notes) between different sources of download? E.G if you download the bootleg from Mediafire or instead from Rapidshare, that the sound quality is different?

I think it's usually noted. It's common for some bootlegs as some have maybe five, ten different sources which could be a broadcast, an audience recording, a pro-shot rip, an ALD or even an IEM. The sound quality can be affected by many things from wind to static from the recording equipment being used - when they're mastered for sharing then that is usually edited out to the best of the taper's and / or editor of the bootleg. Same way a proper live album is too, except for the average recording artifacts.

The best way I've found over the years to tell is to open up the links (just the first opening page) and then see which one is bigger and then smaller. Of course the bigger versus smaller file sizes can also be to do with extra files, like artwork, text files, NFO files etc in each one or even a difference in bitrates e.g. 160Kbps to 256Kbps. But an NFO / text file / artwork for a bootleg wouldn't be that big - maybe 5MB or so, but not much more or less.

Chances are a 192Kbps against a 224Kbps > is not gonna be that great for an MP3 - the general gist is that anything above 192Kbps to 256Kbps or VBR ~ 290Kbps is usually indefinable for the average human ear to perceive from most audiophiles - and if you're downloading MP3s and call them great quality you're not a true audiophile in the sense of the word. If you've got the bandwidth and the space to spare, go for the lossless for top quality - but you probably know that anyway.

Mediafire is the latest upload service for bootlegs, so usually that's the latest one and best source from here. A lot of bootlegs are being replaced by various members behind-the-scenes and in the forums, publicly, so you can go through and see which ones have Mediafire links. Usually they have mirrors too, so if one doesn't work, chances are the opposite download has the same or very similar files.
  3. We try to keep the sources synchronized. But sometimes an upgrade is uploaded to one source only.
I only upload to rapidshare, but I always put in the notes details about the best source.

If there is nothing to see than it is likely both sources are the same, if not let us know and we will delete the links or warn the user on the downloadpage
  4. This belongs in stuck in a moment..

Usually we mention if the downloads are different, but 9 of the 10 cases the Mediafire and Rapidshare links are equal files.

If you notice differences, please report it so we can check it.
  5. Thank you people.
  6. Is this a good place to ask how I can play a .rar file?

  7. it will do. You can't play an RAR file. RAR is similar ti Zip files. We need to zip the files in order to upload them and in order to do so we use .RAR. All you need to do is download WinRAR and use that to unzip the files once you have downloaded them from heere. Easy as that

  8. The forum is but this post isn't. But I will explain it quickly.

RAR files contain multiple files. They are handy to download several files at once. To retreive the files in the package you will need a program that can 'extract' these files. When they are extracted you will end up with mp3 files (or other audio files).

WinRAR or 7-zip (free) can extract these 'rar files'.

If you need more help check the FAQ and Info section (link is on the top right corner)
  9. Many thanks to both of you for your help. Sorry for posting in the wrong place!
  10. Getting back on to the subject, is it just my copy or is the sound on Banana Remixes a bit rubbish?

  11. I dont know. As far as i know we dont 'officially' have them on the pages. If you have downloaded the on the forum then you could ask the original uploader if he has better quality files.

If not, you could ask someone in that thread if they have it.

Actually, I'm talking about a physical CD that I bought at a record fair about 12-13 years ago.
