1992-06-15 - Rotterdam, Netherlands - Sportpaleis Ahoy

setlist

Performance notes: It would seem Ultra Violet (Light My Way) was originally intended to be performed at this concert. During Desire, the song normally immediately before Ultra Violet, Bono yells "no Violet, no Violet!"

Performance

There's no faulting them. U2 have fully embraced their new identity and Bono revels in being a Rock Star. This show is solid ZooTV performing - it isn't as over-the-top as some shows but the songs are brought out with full confidence. The older songs feel perfectly at home alongside the new stuff, too.

It's always a treat for the show to open with Bono's long 'I could've lost you' intro to Zoo Station (Is there a name for this? We should have a name for it...). The opening Achtung Baby run is strong, and Bono really wails on Mysterious Ways. As powerful as some later versions of One are, they just can't compare to those ZooTV originals, here Bono includes the 'did you come here to play Jesus? I did' lyric variant. UTEOTW has the long 'is this rock n roll?' ending and Edge provides an especially powerful solo. Wild Horses shines, and actually has an ending instead of just sort of fizzling out like it sometimes did. Edge appears to have a problem during TTTYAATW, but the song is still excellent. Bono changes lyrics in Angel of Harlem and Larry's bongos come through really well. Bono continues to not know the lyric to Dancing Queen (although he actually does attempt most of the song and gets it mostly right this time). Bad has all the extra ZooTV flourishes and some nice Beatles snippets. The solo in Bullet is absolutely blistering and seems different to normal. As ever, the transition from RTSS to Streets is magical like nothing else, and seems especially magnificent here. I Still Haven't Found sounds rather different, quite interesting, and transitions to Stand By Me seamlessly. I maintain that those 1992 versions of With Or Without see the song in its greatest incarnation, and this show supports that stance; even after hearing it a thousand times, shows like this remind you why it's their biggest hit. Love Is Blindness never goes amiss. Bono mumbles something at the beginning of it (possibly some Yeats lines as he was fond of dropping at this point?), and Edge, Adam, and Larry provide a truly chilling performance.

Sound

Sounds brilliant. The crowd are a little absent at a lot of points, which is a shame as it leaves a really hot show feeling kind of cold at parts, but quality-wise you can't fault it.
Recording: "Definitive version (matrix)" - 5 stars

Audience

They're not as much of a presence as you might hope for - they're there between songs and at some other parts (like Angel of Harlem and Still Haven't Found) but they sound kind of faraway. They're definitely excited, though.

Overall

Great show in brilliant quality. The band have figured out ZooTV and are shining with the new material, but I really feel that it's the songs from The Joshua Tree that have the most sparkle in this show, all five are rendered beautifully.

Highlights:
- Mysterious Ways
- One
- Until the End of the World
- probably the best Bono has managed to sing Dancing Queen
- Bullet the Blue Sky (hey, it's ZooTV, right?)
- the Running To Stand Still -> Where the Streets Have No Name transition (and Streets itself is quite the highlight)
- I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
- With Or Without You
- Love Is Blindness
