1989-12-18 - Amsterdam, Netherlands - Rai Europa Hal

setlist

Performance notes: Last performance of Hawkmoon 269, and its only performance outside Australia. This concert came to a premature close because of serious problems with Bono's voice that manifested especially seriously in God Part II. Concerts for the next two nights were cancelled and four replacement shows were performed early in January 1990 in Rotterdam. Because of the premature conclusion of the show, the usual encore with BB King and his band was not played, and accordingly this is the only Lovetown gig at which Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town, and Love Rescue Me were not performed.

Performance

Decent. It's hard to gauge because of the sketchy sound. The band also somehow slightly mangles ISHFWILY, but those moments can sometimes be cool to hear in a live show. They dealt with it well and all, but it still detracts from a fantastic performance.

Bono also seems to think he's in an opera house. Songs like "Bad" and "New Years Day" might as well have been sung by Pavarotti himself. Miss Sarajevo? Sure. Bad? No thank you, I'll just have my Bono please.

Sound

A 3 on AVERAGE, but that means highs and lows too. The sound throughout Hawkmoon was fairly average for an 80's bootleg, I thought, but I honestly had to check my iTunes to realize that they had begun playing Desire. It sounded like the exact same song. I realized that The Edge's guitar wasn't very clear at all- it wasn't just how it was supposed to sound during Hawkmoon. I wasn't overly impressed by this one.

Audience

Good audience, nothing to rant and rave about.

Overall

Nothing I'll be revisiting. Check out some of the earliest Lovetown shows or a Point Depot show to really capitalize on what Lovetown was all about. This bootleg is great for performances that were super-rare, like "Hawkmoon" and "God Part II", but the rest of the material was just average.

Highlights:
-Hawkmoon 269
-The Unforgettable Fire (only standout track that wasn't new material)
-God Part II
-Van Dieman's Land (superb)

Lowlights:
-I Will Follow (so slow, I thought I was going to fall asleep)

And although it pains me too much to list it as a lowlight, "Bad" just did NOT cut the mustard for me on this one. And that rarely, rarely happens. Bono takes too many parts down octaves, making them easier to sing, and like I mentioned before, uses that damn opera voice when he shouldn't.
