Performance

14th time seeing the band live and this was easily the weakest performance I've seen, and a pure tragedy considering how good they were some 20 months ago in the old Point.

SBS as an opener doesn't do it for me, I'll lay that out first, and I'm somewhat prejudjiced that a band I love has now adopted doing a nostalgic, 'greatest-hits-in-all-bar-name' tour. So perhaps this isn't a fair review. But I thought SoI was fresh, and whilst not up to standards of past albums there was enough there to justify relevance.

Alas, in the great bowl of Croker, with a general mixture of tourists, and corporate fans, this felt like a band that had succumbed to focusing on their prior relevance.

The stage is impressive, but whereas on Popmart they could use a stage to enhance the music they were playing, here it felt like some of Corbijn's visuals were threatening to eclipse the show.

Bono has his critics, but he's usually charming and quite witty on stage: a master showman. One of the simple but great things he's done on recent tours in introduce the band with some comparisons relevant to that city he was performing with. His connection with the crowd fell flat more than once: trying to get the 'America' snippet going twice for Bad, the weird tail-off for the Rugby World Cup analogy. He sounded tired, and not just his voice.

More than one person compared this gig unfavourably to the recent Coldplay gig at the same venue, and noticeably partially because Bono has been losing his edge (no pun intended) with the crowd. The increased preaching (compared to the last two tours) doesn't help either.

MS as an encore opener - really? Little things as a closer? When a largely inebriated crowd were happy to give you a proper ovation off stage..

Sound

Solid sound recording.
Recording: "Epic Nights of Rock 'n' Roll" - 3.5 stars

Audience

In merry voice; better than the previous Croker gigs I've been to.

Would have given the band a huge ovation at the end had they not confusingly ended with 'Little things' having given them a load of hits prior to that. Always leave them wanting more boys, and end on a high. Nearly 40 years in the bizness, that much should be obvious.

Overall

A fantastic album lazily sandwiched between hits didn't do it for me, and less so when the manner of some of the songs played left much to be desired. RHMT needed Edge's guitar, and you were left wondering who was supporting who with the brass band. I liked Exit a lot, but 'eeney meeney miney mo'? Compare it to the Exit/ Gloria medley on the re-released album and that's the standard you end up feeling the band are too comfortable to aim for.

The band were home, and never got out of their slippers. A crying shame.
