Performance

There used to be an old joke about 80s TV hero McGyver's ability to turn a Bic biro and a 10p piece into a bazooka in a crisis. It's testament to U2's mastery live that it was able to take one of London's least accessible stadiums, certainly the one with the worst acoustics, a usually reserved and urbane crowd and surely the most over-priced/ under-cooked chips in history and turn this event into a joyous, uplifting and memorable occasion. 'Train spotters' will mourn the lack of A Sort of Homecoming or MLK, but the classics are classics for a reason and an intro of Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day, Pride and Bad is awesome in the truest sense of that word. And that's from a 'train spotter'! And The Joshua Tree... I never thought I would hear some of those songs live, and certainly never thought that they would sound so good and so relevant. The encore was by turns heart-rending (Miss Sarajevo), thought-provoking (UV Light) and all out party-time rock'n'roll (Elevation/Vertigo). If the I&e Tour was magnificent cabaret, tonight was all heart and soul and sweaty t-shirts.

Sound

A really listenable recording (Alysha) that captures the event really well. Great bass! Play it loud!
Recording: "KM 140 - PCM-M10" - 4.5 stars

Audience

The crowd in it's entirely was on it's feet from start to finish, but the bouncy mass in GA hugging the front and left of the stage was astonishing to see from the East stand. There were Rainbows and tricolours and - maybe I'm imagining this - fewer phones than has become the norm? It looked more like a scene from Croke Park '85 or Páirc Uí Chaoimh in '87, rather than the usual boaters-with-gingham of rugby HQ. Our group was aged 8-70; everyone loved it.

Overall

We arrived at Rosebine CP at 2.50pm and parked easily. We found grub in Tescos, had a coffee in the Mariott, listened to NG's soundcheck and strolled through Gate E at half four. The stewards and staff at Twickenham were superb throughout - as they always are - chatting with fans, taking photos and generally adding to the occasion. Our seats were £100-ish and a bit further back than we would have liked, but once the fun stuff kicked off we didn't much care. Noel Gallagher was fantastic and made us wonder what craic a 30th Anniversary of 'What's the Story...' would be like if the more wayward of the Gallagher children could be coaxed down from Twitter for long enough. U2 were well-rehearsed, energetic and engaging, in relaxed, chatty humour (Adam's missus is expecting Bono tells us...) The production is superb and deserves a Paris-style BluRay release for Christmas. Leaving the ground was straightforward, the car park was well-marshalled and we were back on the M25 within an hour of the final strains of Don't Look Back in Anger. Cacophonic Twickenham acoustics notwithstanding, this was a great, great gig. Roll on Páirc Uí Chrócaigh.
