Performance

The Innocence and Experience Tour had some reparations to make in this house after a dodgy trip to see the big claw in 2009. We hadn't seen a decent U2 gig in a decade.

The ingredients were there: a decent record, a superb and varied setlist, a genuine solution to the whole 360 thing and in London's o2, a superb indoor venue.

And we're pretty forgiving fans. We met via the Grapevine pages of Propaganda, hooked up during the Elevation Tour around Europe in 2001 and tied the knot to the (audible) strains of Walk On. Our house is packed to the gunnels with every recorded note, promo, vinyl and bootleg we could forage.

London 3 did not disappoint. Having run through many tour 'regulars' on the first two nights, tonight we had Gloria - which I had never before seen live - New Year's Day and Bad, all relegated to infrequent cameos on this tour. Other newbies for me were October and Zooropa, albeit in its new down-tempo mode. Tonight's headline came for the last song of the evening when Patti Smith joined the stage to reprise her Horses turn on Van Morrison's Gloria in the Bad outro, before remaining for a full version of People Have the Power. Amazing.

Amra, in what is becoming the Year of the Superfan, and with her kitten ears, made it onto the B Stage for the second time this tour. Time for me to work on that mirror ball hard hat...

Throughout the visuals were stunning. At times they were the focus, but mostly they were subtly supportive. You can see the tricks gleaned from other tours. For all that, the highlight for me was the powerful opening sequence of The Miracle-Gloria-Vertigo-I Will Follow, played beneath a stylised single lightbulb as U2 proved they didn't need big tellies.

This was the finest U2 gig I have seen since 2001. Any fallout from last year's iTunes debacle, Broadway musicals, dodgy singles and foreground forklifts seem to be in the rearview window; this band is in top gear.

Sound

This is likely to be one of the tour's most downloaded shows, given Patti Smith's involvement. As an audience recording this is clear, consistent and perfectly listenable. As an attendee, I'm grateful for the taper's efforts. Terrific memento, thank you.
Recording: "CA11 - ZOOM H2n" - 4 stars

Audience

Tired commuters, weary travellers and still this was a lively bunch. Few early pints and tomorrow night's Friday few will be bouncing!

Overall

First proper U2 gig in a decade. A victory for music over props!
