2001-11-16 - Oakland, California - Oakland Coliseum Arena

setlist

Performance notes: A fan is brought on stage to play guitar and begins strumming A Sort Of Homecoming. U2 go along with it, despite the fact Bono struggles to remember the lyrics. This is the last time A Sort Of Homecoming has been performed. It is also the last time Slow Dancing has been performed. Later in the set, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani joins U2 for the fourth show in a row to sing What's Going On.

Performance

A strong performance from the later stages of the Elevation tour, with the band still sounding fantastic in terms of the music being played on stage. While a couple of mistakes happened sometimes throughout the performance, only two were that noticeable and didn't put me off that much.

Bono, on the other hand, while still having a couple of rough moments vocally due to this being the Elevation tour, delivers a very spirited performance throughout. Feeding off the audience's energy and constantly throws in references to the Bay Area and Oakland as a whole in multiple songs. His improv skills are also shown throughout the night with I Will Follow being the best song that shows it off here, though he does do a lot more slight improvs in other songs, which all sound pretty good as well.

Sound

Great capture of the music side and vocal side of things, and a bit of the audience's atmosphere is picked up throughout, though it isn't as prominent as I'd like it to be.
Recording: IEM - 5 stars

Audience

It's my favourite part of this show if you ask me. Even on the IEM recording that I used to listen to this show on, you could still hear them singing along and fully enjoying the show overall, making them one of the best audiences I've heard on the entire Elevation tour.

Overall

Good show from the later part of the Elevation tour, and while I do prefer shows such as South Bend and New York 10/27, this is still an enjoyable show to listen to from this part of the tour. From the spirited performance from the band to the notable setlist inclusions that are present here, such as the final live version (so far) of Slow Dancing and the inclusion of A Sort Of Homecoming for the second time on the entire tour after the 1st Slane Castle gig in August which does gain some interest for those who would like to hear rare songs on tours which were also some of the highlights of the show though there were also some great performances of setlist regulars here too.

Highlights:

Slow Dancing

A Sort Of Homecoming
