Performance

Very good show and a decent performance. You cannot ignore that setlist. Elevation as expected then BAM, straight into five from Achtung Baby. The Fly is bombastic, Even Better is a full on surprise (very easy to forget that it featured in 2001). Bono chickens out of the 'Take Me Higher' falsetto then ends up doing some falsetto imrpov anyway. A full bore Mysterious Ways is a delight that needs to come back. Sexual Healing snippet and a full solo. Fuck yea. One is an utter delight. The crowd react to it and Bono's guitar work is simply lovely.

Bono singing the guitar solo in SBS while Edge is out of action is effing hilarious. A lovely acoustic section mid set. Bono hasn't a clue what lyrics to sing in AOH 'she sees the teeth behind the lies?'. ISFWILF is gorgeous. I bet the guy near the taper screaming for Party Girl between every song thought his luck was in when Bono introduced it as a rare B-side. Did Bono do the band introductions only for Larry and Adam not to play on either acoustic song?

Controversial one here. As good as it is (and it still stands head and shoulders above most), AIWIY-Streets was a phone it in. Bono's delivery of the Psalm is just so underwhelming that it killed it for me. Bullet hits like a fucking truck and WOWY is genuinely good with Bono's strumming in the final third another real highlight.

Overall though I am just not digging this show as a whole. Maybe it's the slightly sterile recording but mostly there's a sombreness about Bono that I just can't shake. I didn't get vibes that suggested he was really pumped up and on it (which seems to be the characteristic of all the truly great shows I love). This is a great documentary of the tour though with a fairly unique setlist and a great recording to boot. Well worth your time.

Sound

Technically brilliant recording (albeit not fully to my taste. Essential for fans of Bono's guitar playing. All band members are prominent and the crowd feature enough to stop it sounding particularly harsh. Bono occasionally sounds like he's singing in the shower. This is an essential recording from 2001.
Recording: "Vibrations (IEM-AUD Matrix)" - 5 stars

Audience

The crowd don't get a chance to shine in the vibrations recording but you know they were on point. They feature well in NYD and react to all of the big moments. I guarantee they would sound amazingly good on a solid audience recording of this show.

Overall

A very good show and a very good recording, it just never gets to that 'other place' that I really crave from my U2 shows. If this was a 4/5 star audience source I think I would rate it higher because that sterile edge would be removed and the audience would shine a lot more. A good audience recording is my jam.

This show is a definite listen if you're shopping for something from 2001.
