Performance

The band was getting there. A much improved performance compared to the start of the tour.

Sound

Clear sound. No problems on my end.
Recording: "PopCapital" - 4 stars

Audience

It looks like Washington didn't get the memo that Popmart was supposed to be unappreciated by Americans, because they were incredibly loud throughout the show. Edge was impressed during the karaoke part and Bono also acknowledged that. Great crowd.

Overall

To me, this is the best Popmart show of the first leg. Crazy things happened to U2 in Washington. The screen was almost ruined from a storm the previous day. Bono said "Last time we came to Washington, I broke my shoulder, this time a monsoon nearly took out the whole telly... what's wrong with you people!?" (in reference to his accident during the JT tour in Washington).
The songs were in transition. They are still performed different from the later versions (Please is still not as powerful, Mofo still had the last verse complete, etc.) but they are improving. Gone was already in its final form and it sounds fantastic. During Discotheque, there were sound explosions for every "boom cha!". I don't know how many times that occurred, but it sounds cool. The show still had some pacing problems, putting ISHWILF and Pride too soon, but the performances were great, with a Stand By Me snippet after ISHWILF and the crowd sang incredibly loud those songs.
One of the main highlights of this show is the best Staring At The Sun ever. I really prefer this over the acoustic versions and it was flawless this show. Loved the extended outro. Please is dedicated to Leonard Peltier, who later inspired Native Son (at least that's what I heard). It's still missing the great climax at the end, but you can see the song is going places.
After a great encore, the show ends with Unchained Melody and the crowd roars signaling the end of a great show.
