Performance:
It is very early in at the tour, and of course that means raw, undeveloped performances. This works very well for some songs, but not so well for others (i.e. some of the new songs). Classics like Running to Stand Still, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Beautiful Day and Mysterious Ways are looser and less tiresome than later on in the tour. Other than that there were some technical flaws during Sunday Bloody Sunday (Edge broke a string) and City of Blinding Lights (no keyboards present during intro, which really took away of the performance).
But the main reason why I downloaded this show was of course the very experimental and unique setlist. It was the first time Love and Peace or Else opened a concert, and it's awesome, way better than Vertigo, and maybe even City of Blinding Lights. The intro of Wake Up / Everyone connects perfectly with the long intro of LAPOE itself, and it's a real shame this song only opened very few times on the first leg only.
Unlike the eight shows after this one which LAPOE opened, where Vertigo would follow and the set would proceed as normal, the whole show was turned inside out: what was normally the middle section including LAPOE, now opened the concert. This works surprisingly well, and reminds a little of the JT days with BTBS, RTSS and ISHFWILF very early in the set. SBS this early on is also very nice. The Pride - WTSHNN - One section right in the middle is very unique as well, but it all seems to flow very naturally.
The only major disadvantage of this setlist is the apparent absence of an encore; rather, there seem to be two almost equally long sets. This must be really confusing for the audience, which is probably one of the main reasons they never played such a set again. Also no Boy songs is a shame: on the other hand, I did like four HTDAAB tracks being played consecutively at the end.
Publikum:
Quite a standard North American audience, only cheering after the ending of songs and almost entirely quiet during. No very enthusiastic responds when songs kick in, not even with classics such as Pride, WTSHNN and One. They also barely knew or cared for any of the new songs or revived songs. Overall: disappointing.
Sound:
Not bad, just a little distant at times, and not perfectly balanced (low bass, vocals tend to drown out at times).
Gesamteindruck:
Standard Vertigo performance, apart from the setlist. Download when you have already heard a lot of Vertigo shows, love the tour in general, and want to hear something different setlist-wise. Otherwise it's not very special, and can even be annoying sometimes as with all Vertigo gigs (same human rights video and One speech over and over again, had to edit them out because I couldn't take it any longer). |

Performance:
Not bad for a live debut. But it seemed like they were trying too hard to get it right the first time by using a different arrangement, like the different intro and the conga drums (I think) from Larry. It may have been better if they tried to play it as it was on the album (for most of it) and then slowly discovering what needs to be changed, and so having it ready for the start of the tour. Also the transition from the chorus to the 'let me in the sound' bridge was weak.
Publikum:
Good for a general crowd, quite enthusiastic.
Sound:
Disappointing for a TV broadcast. Badly mixed, and the crowd was a little too loud (could be because they were probably close to the cameras etc.). It sounded closer to an excellent audience recording.
Gesamteindruck:
It's nice to have since it was the first time they played it, but it's not a keeper. The tour performances are most likely gonna be a lot better, and by then I have probably already forgotten about this performance. |

Performance:
This is one of the great early gigs with a lot of energy in it. The band really gave all they got. Especially Bono's performance, not just the vocals but also the power and enthusiasm on songs like the first 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, Another Time, Another Place and The Electric Co. is really amazing.
Publikum:
The audience seems to be into the concert: they know the songs and they shout for songs like Out of Control and 11 O'Clock in the encore, which makes this boot even better. They're quite well audible, not too much, but that also has to do with the size of the crowd of course. Overall I'd say the balance between the music and the crowd is excellent.
Sound:
Perfect, you can hear every instrument on the foreground, and also the crowd as mentioned above.
Gesamteindruck:
No bad performances, the band on fire on every song, excellent audience and sound quality: these all make this boot one of the best, if not the best, of the Boy Tour. |
