Biography
|
I became a fan in April 2007. Pretty late and I totally regret it.
I realized the greatness after I've, by chance, found Spiral's blog and decided to give them a shot as there were some SBD bootlegs. I think it was Elevation in Sacramento that led me to think "WTF, I didn't know they were so great live!" and downloaded some more bootlegs. The more I listened the more impressed I was by their live energy, so the more curious I became about them (only knew some greatest hits): I watched youtube clips and read bios. Really everything I found out was what I was looking for in a band/musician: music, meaning, fun and humour, passion, social conscience, attitude.... I've had this love for artists before, but not in the extent I developed with U2. Feels good. |

Performance:
The guys were on Popmart-fire that night and you can hear this actually throughout every single song of the concert. Edge was in extraordinarily superb playing mood and Bono both a true entertainer (eg "Even Better...", "Last Night On Earth" or "Hold Me Thrill Me..." and humbled guy who isn't afraid of showing his feelings ("Still Haven't Found" or "One" .
Audience:
The audience was VERY into it and showed their enthusiasm and love at various times, best notable during "Desire", "Pride", "Still Haven't Found..." and "Mysterious Ways".
Sound:
Clear, gapless, great balance. What more could you ask for ?
Overall:
No lows, just highs really!
This was one of the first bootlegs I listened to and is since then my fave one because it really started my fandom and can be seen (actually both heard and watched!) as a perfect example of how great a U2 concert is.
Although it's hard to, some of my personal stand out songs here are
"Mofo" as it is the best live version of the song ever (imo)! I love especially Bono's greatly flowing singing and the little improvs he does here, too.
"I Will Follow" is a top notch performance as well. When I first heard this live version of I Will Follow, I was really blown away by the distinct difference from the 'normal' version. Simply Popmart-style.
"Pride" because of the passion the audience brings. When you watch the DVD you can see how impressed Bono is because he purposely stops starting singing the 3rd verse.
"Still Haven't Found" because if the audience (again), Bono's emotional talk and the powerful and emotional live rendition itself.
"All I Want Is You" because of the "Never Tear Us Apart" snippet. I remember clearly that the first time I listened to this I wasn't aware of Bono sometimes singing snippets from other songs, and when I suddenly heard him singing the lines from this INXS song I was close to tears for its power and meaning.
"Desire" ... priceless: Bono forgetting lyrics and trying to save his ass with "La Bamba" ....so to speak.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" has Edge singing it solo, only armed with his acoustic guitar. Awesome!
"Bullet The Blue Sky" from this concert is my fave Popmart rendition. Awesome guitar by the Edge!
"Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" as it is pure, mean rock by U2 . Great lyrics, great live.
"Mysterious Ways" for Edge's funky play/moves and Bono's singing at the end.
And "One" rather obviously for the Michael Hutchence reference and emotional performance.

Performance:
The band's in a good mood, eg Bono's alter egos, Larry's little speech before "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around The World" or Edge's nice solo in "With Or Without You".
It also has some lil 'mistakes', eg the piano play in "New Year's Day" or when Larry misses his drumming part during "When Love Comes To Town".
Audience:
Although the main focus is on the band's performance, the audience is mixed in greatly where appropriate and suitable. However, you do not get an all-live feeling throughout the concert, BUT almost.
Sound:
Regarding the MATRIX: Awesome job Noiseless did!
The sound is pretty clear and very decent. You can hear the instruments in a great balance. Cannot get much better in cases of Matrixes imo.
PS: Also highly recommended is Noiseless' upgrade on Sarajevo 1997.
Overall:
Solely the sound quality should make the Matrix a must have in your collection.
The concert itself has got a rather personal touch as Bono makes references to East Rutherford a couple of times, which really makes it something special.
Songs that stand out for me are:
- Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World (nice singing/expressing by Bono, great guitar towards the end which sometimes really reminds you of/IS "Montgomery's Visit", an Achtung Baby Outtake, and the snippet of "Three Little Birds" - not "Love And Affection" as stated in the setlist.
- When Love Comes To Town (great version in general, especially because Larry forgets his drumming, and Edge sings parts of the vocals, too)
- I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (great, great laid-back-version)
- With Or Without You (Shine Like Stars-snippet and great guitar solo by The Edge)
- Love Is Blindness (sends shivers down your spine, so to speak...)
The only "lows", if you count them as such, are the little mistakes in "New Year's Day" and "When Love Comes To Town".

Performance:
The band's in a great mood, especially Bono seems to have a lot of fun that day, making jokes and comments, eg ''The Edge has been given me some guitar lessons... it doesn't seem to be of any good...'' ("People Get Ready" , and bringing a lot of power and real devotion into his perfomance.
Also Edge, Adam and Larry are playing greatly and in perfect sounding condition, so to speak .
The concert doesn't start with "Where The Streets Have No Name" which was the usual opener, but with the cover "Stand By Me". The rest of the concert then had a typical setlist for the Joshua Tree Tour.
Audience:
The crowd is nothing less but amazing! It greatly sings along with the band from the first to the last song, with setting highlights during "Stand By Me", "C'Mon Everybody" (!!!), "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", "Party Girl" and "40".
Sound:
The sound of the bootleg is remarkably great regarding age and it being an audiecen recording: fresh and rather clear, and making you feel like you're standing right in the crowd, feeling all the energy.
Overall:
I consider this one as my fave bootleg from the Joshua Tree Tour, mainly for the fact of the crowd being so fantastic and the sound quality which makes you feel as if you're really among people in the crowd.
The band's performance is overall a real treat, too: no noticable mistakes in playing and Bono being on fire makes this show a musthave.
Fave songs from this bootleg:
- "C'Mon Everybody" (Bono's introduction, crowd singing along greatly)
- "People Get Ready" (funny Bono, fan plays guitar)
- "Sunday Bloody Sunday (very 'motivated' Bono, great crowd singing)
- "The Electric Co." (awesome snippet!)
- "Bad" (this song is always a highlight in a concert)
- "With Or Without You" (you gotta love the snippets)
- "Party Girl" (great snippet, great crowd once again, funny Bono)
