Had the Band War poster in my room as early as 7th grade, blood red sky album and video was played continuously, added the unforgettable fire (band & castle) poster in 8th grade, was cool to listen to U2 - only kids in drama club and older brothers & sisters in college knew about them...,then in 11th grade came the Joshua Tree. Now all my friends heard u2 for the first time, saw the videos and the world exploded with U2 fandom...it was now mainstream cool to blast u2 and that’s ok because everyone was enjoying the band that was a little unknown gem for so long. U2, after writing the songs that guided my youth, would go on to write the songs of my young adulthood, from career starting, to marriage and children to middle aged, and more to come. It’s sometimes inspirational, sometimes comfort, sometimes solemn, and sometimes pure rock fun! U2 has been a friend that I’ve always come back too, proudly, and happily. Recent capstone for me was my wife & I flying from Pittsburgh to Philly to see the 2017 Joshua Tree Tour in all its glory! I was in total retro youth mode that night - opening with SBS, NYD, Pride, Bad, then the Joshua tree......that was the show as an 11th grader I dreamed of seeing, all the songs of early youth, and still just as meaningful to me at 47! You see, I didn’t get to see u2 on the Joshua tree tour - they were just too damn popular - and in those days all you could do was call on the phone at 10am & hope to get through - wasn’t meant to be - three rivers stadium sold out while I kept getting busy signals on the phone.....So these many years later it was even more special and the band were absolutely perfect as well! Now, as I drive around with my own teenagers, we alternate who’s DJ, so of course I have to endure the latest pop trash, but when it’s my turn I slip in some Jurassic Rock, not too much, not too obscure, just to show the kids what once was and why it still is “GREAT” Music. And you know what, they Sometimes pause from their phones long enough to notice something special, where the Streets have no name, with or without you, I still haven’t found, pride, bad..... For example (true story) The next time we are cruising one of my kids will take their turn DJ and say “this ones for you dad”, and proceed to play beautiful day, mysterious ways, vertigo, every breaking wave.....all songs I never even played for them previously!! Just goes to show you the great ones will find a way to move into the next generation all on their own! U2 - Thank you !
