reading the article though :

''In the first concert confirmed for the new venue''

doesn't 100% mean they will be the first to play. Coldplay would be shunned and the venue would open a week earlier if U2 offered themselves but have U2 ever played a full set outside of a tour schedule?

So far, it's not certain that Coldplay will actually open it. They are the first to be confirmed, but there's room left for others before... Somehow, I actually doubt that U2 is gonna play there, though. It's just too small - unless they do about 10 shows in a row or some kind of Promo stuff - which might be possible...

14 thousand isn't small. They've played venues that size and smaller on Elevation and i'm sure some of the American arenas they played during Vertigo weren't much louder.

I do think though that if U2 do play there it won't be as part of the tour. Perhaps a weeks run of shows close before or after the album release to test some of the new material. REM did something similar in Dublin last year didn't they?

I think it depends on their tour-scheme etc. They won't start a tour until the first months of 2009, so it is a possibilty.

To add to the optimism: The promo shows for the last two tours that had fall album release dates all were between late October and December (i.e. Brooklyn Bridge NYC show in November for Vertigo Tour, the Irving Plaza show for Elevation).

Yep, R.E.M. tried their new stuff there about a year ahead of the release.
With small, I mean compared to the stadiums. You're right about the Elevation and Vertigo gigs.
But these legs where Arena gigs (with a few exceptions) and I doubt that the european leg of the new tour will include arenas.
As I said before, a promo gig might be a possibility...

I think a promo is the only possibility aswell. Or I could see them booking it for a week for rehearsals or something similar. Can't see a tour stop though, not with Croke Park 2 miles away)

Just read an article in an Irish Belfast Newspaper and it raised a few possible maybes. . . .

Ok. . The Point Depot in Dublin has been knocked down and Is being refurbed and turned into a 13,000 seater music venue (the first of it's kind in Europe to be built as a specific music venue). Interestingly, the venue is to be promoted and named as 'The O2' (ala London) as part of a joint venture between O2 and the Live Nation concert promotion company who have just recently signed U2 to their portfolio. The new Point Depot is due to finish this coming December so is it possible that we may say U2 opening the new venue or maybe even playing the venue next year, 20 years after the infamous 1989 gigs?

2 things are for certain. . . I hope the hell that this is true and. . . .i'll be there if it is

U2 would be the first artist to play the new Point.... who else would?
