"The incident could have happened as a result of negligence. A while ago at this site there was an exhibition commemorating the [1980-1988] Iran-Iraq war," Commander Ali Moayeri, police chief of Fars province, told Fars news agency.

"The munitions left at the site could have been the reason for this explosion," he added. The agency said he ruled out any act of sabotage.

That sounds better than a bomb (or worse in some ways)...I hope they're not covering it up

Unfortunately, the cynic in me says there may well be more than an element of that Ali m'man - most people in positions of power didn't get there by hardwork and honesty alone...

Anyway guys, off again, laters all

Question for Ali, really:

I read this article yesterday, and it made me wonder what the general attitude in your country is regarding Western music (U2 included). I think you could make the same argument about Western music that they're making about Barbie.

Thoughts?

You should understand...there are VERY different kinds of people here in Iran. There are people like me, my family and my friends...we're ok with it, the barbie, the music, it's fine.
But there is the other group, the more conservative people, people who strongly support the government, people who voted for Ahmadinejad (note: the election of Ahmadinejad showed that this group are the majority), they are not ok with western music, they are not ok at all with Barbie.

That said, the general attitude about western music, for that majority of the people is "worried" and "suspicious". They are very worried about young people listening to western music, for the exact same reasons as given in that article [Also consider that some clerics, based on a misunderstanding, have declared music to be forbidden in Islam...which doesn't really help with the attitude ]. This kind of music is forbidden here, you can't just go to a store and get an album of U2...you can't find anything from U2 actually. Legally, there are only albums by a few artists...such as Pavarotti, Andrea Bocelli and Chris De Burgh...but that's all.
The rest are all iranian artists...we have good rock bands here too, but I think only one or two of them have permission to give out albums, the others are denied permission, because they sound like the western bands...

But with internet around, and people travelling around, the young...that's us, we get the music that we want, and in the end they just can't stop us from it

Long post...but you get an idea

Well isn't the same thing in all countrys ?

Probably to different levels, but even in Canada, who is renown as an open minden contry we still have people who just can't get the fact that not all arabs are terrorist, or that not all Italians havs with the Mafia,

for example, a small town named HerouxVille created last year their own chart of laws. In this chart, you could reed things like ...

Immigrants will have to respect our laws, and things THEY do will not be tolerated, as for example

(now I dont now this word in English (double darn) buts it means killing ppl by trowing rocks at them) ... (that word) to you're wife, because some estearn country still allow it,

well, this isn't really clear but still !

Too true...It frightens me how much right wing attitudes have become "cool" again across much of the Western World. Neo-Nazism on the rise in certain parts of Europe, people across the UK seeming to think that the BNP are a good political option...fucking pathetic, quite frankly. I long for the day when people stop thinking it's ok to make jokes with racist content etc., and when people start to realise that fascism is a bad thing, and that an advanced extreme form of fascism was the catalyst of the biggest war this world has ever seen. When will people grow up and smell the fucking coffee?
