I think COBL is a great opener. But it's not as epic for a U2 starter. Streets was a good opener, but a better song when towards the end. Zoo Station was great, but that was for Zoo TV. Same goes for Mofo and Elevation. To me U2 will always use a new song to start the show. Perhaps the new album will provide us with one. As for COBL, I think it will be great toward the end of the set. Perhaps even the set closer, considering the confetti bit. I think it would be awesome if it led into Streets with the synth bit. This song def works best toward the end though.

i think cobl is a great opener. the part of "oh you look so beautiful tonight" really makes people jumping on their feet and get them into the show.

if the recording is a decent one then Mofo takes top honours. It just packs the biggest punch and the whole Pop Muzik thing is just spine tingling and exciting

COBL really lifts things off, the guitar part sounds much more joyful live than on record, it's quite mournful on record I think, maybe not mournful but the live version is much more joyful! I think Elevation really got things going on a good crashing start on the Elevation tour! that song was like a freight train barreling through...same goes for Mofo and Zoo Station....but the crash of Elevation is amazing

City of Blinding Lights (November '06), hearing the guitar and the drums come in is nothing short of amazing - and not on a video or bootleg - but seeing the lights come on for real on the screen literally takes your breath away - I have never seen anything so fucking amazing in my entire life to do with sound or theatrics - well, maybe U2 3D but apart from that, it's the greatest song to open a show - ever to date.
If I could have I would have said Zoo Station is amazing - and hearing the crash and the riff is wicked, but unfortunately I wasn't old enough to go to the Adelaide show and same deal with Elevation as it never came to Australia and the closest POPmart was in Perth or Melbourne, so I missed out on that again - if it were up to me, I'd rate them in this order (the most common openings):
City of Blinding Lights (only 'cos I saw it)
Where The Streets Have No Name
Gloria
Zoo Station
MLK
God Part II
Pop Muzik / Mofo
Elevation
Out of Control
Love and Peace or Else
11 O'Clock Tick Tock
Beautiful Day
Vertigo
Actually, Gloria is a nice way to open a show as is Streets - which were both held in Adelaide ('84 and '89', respectively).

I refuse to compare U2 songs...every song has its time and place...
The same thing is with openers... ZooStation was perfect for ZooTV, Mofo for PopMart and COBL was perfect for Vertigo...
And IMO it works much better as opener then latter in show...there is something sacred in that Edges guitar and keyboard sound that Adam makes at the beginning...

It's a pretty great opener. One of my favorites. I love the Joshua Tree "Where The Streets Have No Name" opener too.
I thought the "Vertigo" shows that opened w/"Love and Peace (Or Else)" were cool too - U2 coming in in the dark with the floodlights...
U2 coming through the crowd during PopMusic / Mofo on the Popmart tour was pretty good theatre.
The Zoo TV openers were great too... Especially the "Bush Rap" into "Zoo Station" during the outside broadcasts.
And the lights-on opening of "Elevation" during the Elevation tours was pretty great too.
All in all, the openers since The Joshua Tree have been grande entrances with great tunes. Love it.

...time won't leave me as I am...
...time won't take the boy out of this man...
Some of my favorite lyrics from the album
COBL works as an opener for this past tour
Seems every tour has its own opener that works.

U2 has two categorys of openers. Those that build, and those that go right in. This is one of the former categorie, and I prefer these for the most part.
