Vertigo as an opener didn't work for me during the stadium gigs. It wasn't a BANG!! in your face opener like Elevation. there was too much build up with drums etc. Wud have worked more if it was dark at the stadium shows. Elevation and Mofo stand proudest for me as openers.

I would say as an opener. I saw Vertigo in an arena here in the US and as soon as the lights went out and Edge started the feedback/delay/ebow opening I went nuts. Shivers ran up and down my spine. Once the riff came in I completely forgot about the curtain call because i was watching Bono come up the steps to the right of me. When I turned around and saw the LED curtain I went into overdrive. I got that roller coaster feeling you get when you go down the first hill. Amazing experience.

INDOORS: Absolutely! If you can control the level of light, nothing beats that buildup of COBL.

OUTDOORS: Too soft, esp. when the SUN IS OUT?!?!?!?. Vertigo really rocks the crap out of a stadium. Man, curfew laws SUCK!

I believe this is already consensus, but I felt like adding my 2 cents.

I'm sorry, but I'm not a big fan of COBL. I vote for Vertigo as show opener.

I think that we have to discuss about which kind of open we want, if a "soft" and emotional open or a rocking one. In the first case, the best HTDAAB's song is COBL. Instead, Vertigo for me is not only the best rocking opener of HTDAAB, but the best rocking opener ever! No other U2's song rocks in the way Vertigo does.
In the end I think (like u2met86 said) we have to consider the place and the situation in which the concert takes place. Then what kind of open we want.
Anyway I like both the opening very very much, as they are THE BEST but not the SAME best. And I like COBL later in the tracks-list too very much.

I don't really care for it as an opener. I really like the few times they opened
with Love and Peace or Else. I think it would be cool to open with ABOY.

COBL, Mofo, Elevation and Streets are best as openers. Vertigo is sort of boring as an opener.

I was in Chicago for the Love and Peace Opener and It worked really well. Then in Detroit on 3rd leg COBL was used and was like a huge Bulid and then BAM. All and all its a tie to me.

Vertigo would be prefect opener if only they played it the way it was recorded.COBL was indeed great opener but unfortunately worked only in arenas and during 4th leg of Vertigo Tour. Anyway best opener for me would be Streets. It's probably their best song ever. God must have been fifth member of the band when they were recording this.
