1992-02-29 - Lakeland, Florida - Lakeland Arena

setlist

Performance notes: Live debuts of Zoo Station, The Fly, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, One, Until The End Of The World, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World, Ultra Violet, and Love Is Blindness. First time U2 covered Satellite Of Love in full, though Bono had snippeted it a few times during Bad in the 1980s. Bullet The Blue Sky and Desire are distinctly different to past live versions. The former is even more hard-rocking than it was on the Joshua Tree and Lovetown tours and features a longer solo. The latter has completely different guitar effects, and during the song, Bono plays the role of Mirrorball Man, a parody of US televangelists.

Performance

The first night of a very ambitious new tour, so there are mistakes here and there but overall the performance can't be faulted. It's interesting to hear some of U2's most familiar songs in what are essentially neonatal versions. Some of them are already very strong (Zoo Station, Even Better), some still need some work (The Fly), and many seem short and cautious compared to later outings (One, Until the End). It's strange to hear these songs without the usual snippets as well (Love To Love You Baby in Mysterious Ways, Unchained Melody in One, Love and Affection and/or Three Little Birds in Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around the World).

Mysterious Ways is impressive, with a different solo and altered lyrics, but it's clear the band are still figuring it out. One is dedicated to a cosmonaut (an early 360 space talk? ) and is also a good version. Bono really mangles a line in Wild Horses but it's still a very great performance of it, somewhat different arrangement to later on with a long outro. Bad is very good here, but the transition into Bullet still needs a bit of work - but Bullet itself is awesome. The encore is very strong - UV is short but it's a great performance, with the 'explicit' variation of lyric. There's not a Mirrorball Man phone call, though - unless it's been cut out from the recording. Frustratingly, Love Is Blindness is cut!

Sound

It's quite good but not outstanding. You won't miss anything with it.
Recording: Audience microphone - 3.5 stars

Audience

They seem very good, and responsive to the new material. Check them out in Bad!

Overall

Good show all around, especially with the complicated new songs! The audience takes to them well and the band have few mistakes. This is a historical show and it's cool to see ZooTV very much in its infancy - the band isn't quite certain how to make it work but they try their hardest and the results are very satisfying.

You should listen to this at least once but whether you keep it around afterwards is a bigger question. Some of the performances are excellent, but for the most part it's a warmup of what's to come...

Lowlights:
- Love Is Blindness is cut!!!

Highlights:
- Zoo Station
- Even Better Than the Real Thing
- Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
- Bad
- Bullet the Blue Sky
- Desire
- Ultra Violet (Light My Way)
