Performance

The Point Depot gigs of 1989 are among the most celebrated of U2's live history. Much of the attention however has been centred on the final show on New Year's Eve and in my opinion wrongly so. While I rate the 31st on top, virtually nothing sets them apart in terms of quality - sound-wise and performance-wise. To demonstrate my point you could have easily put this performance on the 27th on New Year's Eve and it would have been equally popular. It was the occasion that partly made the 31st the most popular.

Without prattling on further, I'll hop into this gig. I thought the boys were in top form this night as they had been all tour (pity there's no top sound quality gigs from Oz to properly illustrate this point), however I really just take half a point off because of the setlist, particuarly the poor encore. I'm no fan of Two Hearts and there was no With Or Without You.

What makes this show great however is the passion and the energy that's clearly exhibited throughout the whole gig. You probably get one of, if not THE, best Lovetown Streets right from the start (with volume up this rocks the house). I've grown tired of the 80's I Will Follow because to me they always seem slower paced than the modern day versions and it's one of those songs that should be sped up to lift the excitement of the audience. The contrast between old and newer versions is very clear in this show.

This disappointment is short-lived however, as the boys simply don't put a foot wrong and Bono is revelling in the fun-filled Lovetown atmosphere. This show also has the best Lovetown versions of The Unforgettable Fire ("with The Edge orchestra!"), God Part II ("get busy!") and MLK (very haunting).

The BB King set is played extremely well also and I really liked People Get Ready with Maria McKee although I always felt this song was overplayed by U2 during the 80's at the expense of one of their original songs.

Sound

Hard to fault. Near professional quality.
Recording: "December X X V I I" - 5 stars

Audience

This really should be N/A because it's a soundboard recording, but the audience seem to go off. Simple as that. Typical Point crowd diggin' the cruisy Lovetown atmosphere.

Overall

All Point Depot shows must be downloaded, listened to regularly and kept on one's iPod and this one is no exception. It's a great snapshot of a great period in this brilliant band's career.
