1989-12-01 - Osaka, Japan - Osaka Castle Hall

setlist

Performance notes: This concert is often said to have somewhat of a "backwards setlist", due to the presence of songs normally played late in the set appearing in its early stages, such as Pride and New Year's Day, while the main set staple trio of Desire, All Along The Watchtower, and All I Want Is You is in the encore. Also noteworthy is the first performance of Slow Dancing in concert - nearly four years before its first official studio release! Bono had previously sung some of the song on Australian radio in October 1989.

Performance

Good Lovetown gig, not quite there with the Dublin or Rotterdam shows, but you must hear this at least once.

Sound

I listened to the lossless source, and the sound was ok, it needed more bass, but for such an old recording, no major complains here.

Audience

They were clapping and singing during 40, but they were dead silent during other songs. I certainly missed a good audience in Running To Stand Still or All I Want Is You.
Plus, one fan really annoyed Bono during People Get Ready and B. tried to prevent any shenanigans of the public during 40. I never thought Japanese audiences can cause such troubles.

Overall

The setlist was shaken quite a bit, I don't know if it flows well, but it's always interesting to hear the band mixing it up.
Highlights:
-- One Tree Hill/WTSHNN, with a nice intro by Bono. OTH was always superb in Lovetown, and this is no exception.
-- Gloria
-- BTBS (Bono does a snippet of 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, but I missed a guitar snippet too)
-- Angel Of Harlem had an extended outro with a Suspicious Minds snippet
-- Desire was pretty good here.
-- In these Lovetown shows Bono jokes about Edge being the reason the Cold War ended, which I thought was quite funny. Also, Love Rescue Me was dedicated to the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Lowlights/Other comments:
-- Songs like RTSS or AIWIY shine with good audience participation. Unfortunately, that was not the case here.
-- I'm not a huge fan of Love Rescue Me, and I missed Glory and Sophie on vocals for this song.
-- As I mentioned before, Bono was in crowd control mode after ISHFWILF, People Get Ready and 40, which may kill the mood for you.
