Performance:
The notorious first night of the PopMart Tour. The boys weren't at the top, really. Bono's voice isn't so good (especially in Even Better Than The Real Thing in the 'You take me higher' part). There are many botches and they didn't know the new songs very well and it seems they forgot the olds too a bit.
Audience:
The audience was in good mood, and they were very loud, in good form.
Sound:
Very good sound.
Overall:
A good place, a good audience, and a new U2, but a not so good U2.

Performance:
A shaky start to the tour, but the glitches are what make the show very interesting. Worth hearing, although the 1997 finale in Seattle is proof positive that PopMart improved -- steadily -- with time. This is a historic gig, but not the best.
Audience:
The excitement dissipated quickly into confusion and disappointment.
Sound:
The soundboard recording is excellent.
Overall:
This is a show to hear in large part because of the band's lack of confidence. It puts the atmosphere of the moment into context. Having rushed Pop into stores against their better judgement, the band now had to take the songs on the road.

Performance:
The guys didn't really have it together here. Theres all the stories about Bono having really bad vocal problems during this show, but to be honest, on this occasion it's the band and not Bono that really fails to perform. They are pretty flat throughout. If God Will Send His Angels has a pretty awful arrangement. Do You Feel Loved gets going towards the end but its pretty flat most of the way too. Miami is great mostly except that Bono sings the third verse in the wrong key which kind of ruins an otherwise great performance. Bullet is, quite honestly Shocking. Average enough performances of Please and Streets are the highlights of this poor show.
If you're getting this show you might as well get the video. Its not one you're going to play very often. Video quality about 3.5/5
Audience:
The start off very excited, and in fairness to them they try to remain so throughout but the quality of the performance leaves them pretty stunned I think.
Sound:
Pretty damn good sound quality throughout. No major complaints.
Overall:
Its worth a listen just because its the Popmart opener and you can see how the tour developed. You won't listen to it a second time though.

Performance:
not very good by u2 extrmemely high standards. they mess up staring at the sun and then start again ad its much better so credit to them realising and admitting their mistake. some good rare songs on here.
Audience:
Fine, normal
Sound:
Perfect
Overall:
low - bono's voice isnt very good, some songs seem to have been poorly rehersed eg all the ones from pop
highs - do you feel loved (rarity) as well as if god will send his his angles, i downloaded it for thoses few rare songs to be honest. Edge singing Daydream Believer is really really cool , I love it, what a legend

Performance:
to put it nicely - deeply flawed performance by the band here... the show actually starts quite well up until do you feel loved? and then it's pretty much downhill from there... not only are the band on terrible form but songs like mofo and gone still need time to develop into the monsters they became later on the tour and so feel quite unsatisfying to listen to in their underdeveloped form here. probably the only two songs that stand out for me are please with its drum sample ending and velvet dress which is performed pretty much as the album version.
Audience:
the audience (unlike the band) are pretty much on top form here
Sound:
very good sound - perfect for hearing all the cringeworthy mistakes !
Overall:
the now legendary (among U2 fans) first night of the popmart tour makes for a very uncomfortable listening experience...! if you put yourself in the position of the band its hard to imagine how awful they must have felt on this night.
a few mistakes are to be expected and totally acceptable on the first night of a tour but this is something else... NOTHING seems to go right for them at this concert and then when you consider the fact that they are performing in front of the world's press, trying to sell their new tour to the world, it's quite embarassing to hear them sound like they simply don't know how, or have forgotten how to play their songs!
most people consider staring at the sun to be the lowest point of this gig but for me its discotheque... even when they get the chance to leave the stage after streets and regroup and most likely have a crisis talk. they have been given a chance to redeem themselves after the pretty awful main set with a killer encore, they come out of their lemon to play discotheque and edges guitar completely breaks down... they must have to literally wanted to be anywhere else on earth but in that stadium at that point...
it's easy to look back, knowing what we know now about how the tour was booked before the album was completed and they had no time to get up to an acceptable standard but i still find this show very uncomfortable to listen to and my heart goes out to the band here.
after listening to this you will need a heavy dose of popmart leeds to cheer you up and remind you just HOW amazing this tour became once they got their heads around how it all worked...!

Performance:
I was at this show, and sadly, I remember how shocked I was at the terrible performance of the entire band. Bono's voice was shot, Larry and the Edge botched Staring At The Sun. Lyrics were forgotten, snippets badly used, etc etc. The band and Bono mess up just about every song they played that night. If you want to listen to one of the most embarrassing performances U2 has ever given, here it is.
Audience:
Again, as one of the audience members, I remember everyone starting off losing their minds with excitement. As the night went on, everyone slowly began literally looking around at each other. A kind of collective "WTF?" hit everyone around the time of the utterly disastrous performances of Miami & Bullet.
Sound:
This is a great quality sound of an awful performance.
Overall:
Pure schadenfreude. Thankfully I've seen them many times since, and feel a strange sense of history being there at this awful opening night.

Performance:
the performance was bad but im sitting on my couch listening to a 12 year old concert. im sure if i was at the show i may have a different attitude towards the show but im just shocked at how bad discotheque and angels were...they must have been really embarrassed and bono said many times were getting better right? but he knew it wasnt getting better and needed to try anything to get these people excited...they wouldve been better off playing the zoo tv sydney show on the big screen and sitting this one out but i guess they needed the practice or else leeds and mexico city wouldnt have happened
Audience:
for sitting through the whole thing that was really nice of them so they get a 5/5
Sound:
perfect sound quality
Overall:
3/5 or the equivalent of a 60% on a test which is a D-
i dont care how bad they get they will never perform an F and anyone who rated this concert lower than a 2 is just being brutal. granted they messed up a lot but they got their songs across (the older ones anyways) i thought mofo was really bad too...never heard a bad version of mofo until i listened to this

Performance:
This is a very bad show.Almost every song is screwed up.I have seen them many, many times live, and thank God I wasnt at this show.I saw the band at Giants stadium,05.31.97,great show.A full refund should have been given to the audience.I had heard this was a great sounding boot.Cant believe how many mistakes the band have on this one.The only good versions here are Do You Feel Loved and I God Will Send.....For some reason they didnt play those two soon after
Audience:
You cant hear them.I think they are in shock.
Sound:
Sound is flawless..too bad the band werent.
Overall:
Ill give it a 3 for 2 reasons.....1.They play Do You Feel Loved and If God Will Send His Angels 2. The sound.

This review is written by KieranU2 and written on 2010-05-11 12:03 am.
Performance:
Of course, this was U2's first Popmart show. And also, their first show in about 3 and a half years. That's all acceptable. Also, U2 didn't get enough practice because Pop over-ran. Some songs were performed well overall. I think the timing of the band was poor. They had to start Staring at the Sun over again which was because of timing. I don't think they got Staring at the Sun sussed live at the start. I think the full band version is good but the acoustic version, I prefer. Bono's singing was rather lazy. By the end of the year, there were no problems in Popmart... except from the malfunctioning lemon of course.
Audience:
And some points, you could hear them cheering and all that. They were a good audience in terms of putting up with a rather awful performance.
Sound:
Very good sound, no doubt about it.
Overall:
Highlights: Do You Feel Loved, If God Will Send His Angels, Mysterious Ways, Please, Miami and Pride
Lows: The rest, the timing, Staring at the Sun having to start over again, Mofo, Bono's singing.
