Project Notes:
Before the 2015 tour dates were announced, an LA-based U2 filmer tried to talk me into doing a big project for upcoming U2 LA shows. The plan was to an "ultimate" version of LA to include 4k multicams with high end audio of all songs performed in LA. The multicam part stalled out but I always kept the project in mind. In the fall/winter of 2015, I completed mixes of 5/27 + 5/28 + 5/31 + 6/3, but never started the other two shows. With the hopes to finalize the project before the new Joshua Tree Gimmick Tour, I started working on mixes of 5/26 + 5/27 + 5/30 concurrently (revised the original 5/27 mix). So with full mixes of every show done, it was a matter of stitching everything together into something cohesive.

I tried to keep the structure of the show. However there are some overlaps, such as the two band intros mid-song or three successive closing songs. Since I wanted to include all tracks performed throughout the 6 show residency, compromises were made. The clips from the Roxy Club show didn't fit into the main arena set, so they're tacked on as bonus tracks.

Song selection was mostly at my discretion (for songs with multiple takes). Feel free to criticize all you want. Sometimes I had an easy choice with goofed up versions, but other times it was just a personal preference.

Show Notes:
I would argue the LA run is where the 2015 tour really came together. The Phoenix shows were surprisingly good, but the stretch in LA was something special. After the show of 5/26/2015, U2's Tour Manager of 33 years Dennis Sheehan passed away in his hotel room. By all reports, everybody in U2 land was shocked and heartbroken. Throughout the remainder of the shows, Bono would discuss the importance of Dennis and their loss. I've tried to retain some of these moments within the compilation.

As a personal (and brief) review of each show:

Night 1 (5/26/2015) - something of a glitchy show and not their best.
Night 2 (5/27/2015) - U2 turned in one of the best emotional shows I've seen by U2, and has the highest number of songs in the set.
Roxy (5/28/2015) - started as a make-up promo show, but turned into one of the most energetic and unique shows by U2 in the last 15 years.
Night 3 (5/30/2015) - had highlights but was a bit of an emotional let-down compared to the past couple shows.
Night 4 (5/31/2015) - U2 turned it around with an outstanding high energy show with night 4, much better than the previous night
Night 5 (6/03/2015) - Unfortunately I couldn't make it for Night 5, but others reported it to be an outstanding closing show to the LA Residency.

Recording & Mix Notes:
This is a mix of several wireless sources plus variety of audience sources. I can achieve a pretty clear band mix using the wireless, but need the audience recording to capture the live room sound with the audience recording. These prove to be the biggest variable in sound, as adding too much audience recording muddies the sound, but also adds life. Additionally, each audience recording acts and behaves very differently. I did the best I could to my ears, but others might have different preferences.

5/26 + 5/27 + 5/30 were all mixed at the same time, so sound the most alike. The other shows will sound a bit different, but hopefully not too distracting.

Wireless recordings are not for everyone. If not they're not your thing, either sonically or ethically, there's excellent audience recordings out there.

Similarly, I'm mixing primarily for my ears. This is what sounds best to me. This may not sound best to you. That's a fair statement. I'm open to honest criticism (although you should have caught me when I was working on the mix!), but pointless complaining is unappreciated (naturally). Let's play nice.

Not currently planning on releasing any other 2015 stuff at this time.

Please don't convert to mp3, then back to wave, and then trade it around. This stuff is too easy to find on torrents now.

Please do not attempt to remaster/remix this recording and spread it around. This has been heavily processed, and if you want to do your own mix, go get the wireless recordings (good luck) and do it yourself from scratch.

Also, please don't torrent or post on other sites without at least dropping me a line and asking. I may want to just post it there myself. Please ask (and wait for permission!) before putting it into any matrix + video. If you ask nicely, I will likely say “yes”.

J'avais vérifié en rentrant du concert la veille si je verrai mieux l'écran ou pas pour ce deuxième concert. La réponse était oui et ça change complètement la perception du concert.
En fait j'ai tout compris. La conception et la réflexion autour de la setlist, les animations sur l'écran et le jeu de scène quand le groupe est dedans (notamment sur "Until the End of the World").
Et en plus de cela, le concert à été d'excellente facture. Retour de "Out of Control" que j'avais vu venir mais que j'attendais avec impatience. Super version qui met vraiment la pêche. On apprécie tout de suite mieux la setlist et notamment les nouvelles chansons lorsque l'on voit les jeux de scène. "Raised by Wolf" est mon gros coup de coeur. Le groupe a vraiment su en faire un très bon morceau sur scène avec une grande intensité (et qui bénéficie en plus de l'enchaînement avec "Until the End of the World", toujours lui).
La partie du concert dans l'écran est elle aussi plutôt pas mal, "Invisible" rend vraiment bien même si le fait que le groupe soit en majorité caché donne l'impression de moins profiter de la chanson.
Changements de setlist assez intéressants pour la partie sur la b-stage, avec le doublé "Desire" / "Angel of Harlem" et le tout en électrique.
La fin du concert sera marqué par un beau plantage au début de "Pride" et une version non prévue de "Bad". Je ne me lasserai jamais de cette chanson bien qu'un peu courte malgré le snippet de "Moment of Surrender" (c'est donc tout ce qu'il reste de "No Line on the Horizon"...). Et surtout" 40" que j'ai eu le plaisir de ré-entendre après Amsterdam en 2005. Un très beau moment pour clôturer ce deuxième concert qui m'a vraiment rassuré tant sur ce que propose le groupe comme noyau de la setlist que les aménagements possibles (même s'ils ne sont pas non plus dingues.) ça reste le début de la tournée, le potentiel est là, ne reste plus qu'au groupe qu'à l'exploiter.

SON

Placé plus haut que la veille dans le virage, le son est très bon et bien pêchu. Le groupe semble plus proche et plus détaillé au niveau des instruments et de la voix. Il y a un peu plus de public également mais sans que cela ne soit trop intrusif, surtout des claquements de main, ce qui donne au global un sontrès propre.

A noter : un son légèrement différent à la toute fin de "Until the End of the World", je me suis retourné vers une personne derrière moi qui avait renversé sa bière. Les micros étaient sur ma casquette. Ça dure 2/3 secondes tout au plus.

Performance

Wasn't sure what to expect with the passing of Dennis Sheehan that morning. How would you feel if you had to go on stage and put on a rock'n'roll persona for 17,000 people, hours after losing a friend of 30 years? But they are total pros, after all, and gave a great performance. Would have given 5 stars, but Bono's voice, which was REMARKABLE early, did sort of begin to weaken later, and there were a couple of very minor early-tour flubs. Only other criticism is that "Even Better Than The Real Thing" lacked the proper energy and tempo compared to previous years. That was the only time I really felt the band's age...or it could have been the tragedy of earlier that day and their minds weren't right for a dance number...

Audience

I've lived in LA for 20 years, and LA crowds just suck in general for concerts and sporting events. I always find LA crowds to be aloof and self-conscious. It doesn't help that U2's fan base is now 40-50 yrs old, so this isn't ever going to match the ZooTV experience in terms of crazed fans going berserk for 3 hours. That being said, this was an incredibly studious, and engaged, and intent (for LA) crowd that was very emotionally connected all the way to the rafters... despite being too stiff and old to rock out the whole time.

Overall

Probably the most visually creative concert I've ever seen, and that is saying A LOT, given that I've seen every U2 tour since ZooTV. So intimate and personal. Sound quality was as clear and perfect as at 360. I thought most of the new material did well, much better than any of the NLOTH songs in 360, although the crowds never know how to act with the new stuff, but that was the case back in the 90's as well. "Cedarwood Road" was spectacular, and the creativity with the LED video board was off the charts. Another high point was "Bullet the Blue Sky," especially Edge's solo and Bono's Dr. Seuss-like rap at the end. Way to keep it fresh!! Really no disappointments at all, and given the circumstances of the day, pretty amazing effort by the boys. Bad was a wonderful addition. Nice to see they can still go off script. Although I could do with more Achtung Baby numbers (that video board is begging for Zoo Station or The Fly), I think I enjoyed the production and overall experience as much as any show I've ever seen of theirs, and honestly, I did NOT think I would be saying that before the show. Worth every penny spent.
