2001-11-23 - Phoenix, Arizona - America West Arena

setlist

Performance notes: In God's Country is performed for the first time since 9 October 1989. Bono claims that it is the first time it has been performed in 15 years, despite the fact that The Joshua Tree was only 14 years old in 2001! A female fan is brought on stage to cover Bob Dylan's I Shall Be Released - although Bono had participated in a performance of it as recently as 30 June 2001, the song was last played at a U2 concert on 20 April 1987. No Doubt's Gwen Stefani joins the band for What's Going On; this is the last of her eight consecutive performances of the song with U2.

Performance

Just an all-around 4 star performance. Nothing stands out as particularly AMAZING, but all of the songs are in pretty top form.

Sound

Parts of this show sound pro-recorded. "Elevation" was a little wavy, almost like cupping your hands around your ears at times. The taper was probably just getting things ready, though, for an amazing recording that followed. From BD all the way through the entire show, the sound was AWESOME- probably the best sounding Elevation boot I've ever heard...if not, it's tied for first or second. At the present time, a better sounding bootleg escapes me.
Recording: ALD - 4 stars

Audience

Another great Elevation crowd, though the tour was getting mildly old by then...I was incredibly happy with the mix of audience/band, but more on that in the sound portion.

Overall

Even though the sound was the only thing meriting a 4.5 star recording, some of the treats throughout this show bump it straight up to a 4.5 star.

-All I Want is You (gave me chills)
-Please
-In God's Country
-Beautiful Day's IGC snippet

Those were the really spectacular parts, and now for the other noteworthy highlights-

-New Years Day
-Out of Control
-Kite
-Walk On

Lowlights:

-I Shall Be Released (I dig fan participation on stage- but this song has never done it for me, and it was a bit of a burp within the show, I thought)
-Bullet the Blue Sky
-What's Going On

I would reccomend this show to Elevation Tour enthusiasts, but there are a few better shows you could grab. If you're from Phoenix, download this right away- U2's desert spirit that they channeled into The Joshua Tree appear again in this performance, and it shouldn't be missed if this is a hometown gig for you. Otherwise, try out a New York, Chicago, or one of the Slane shows for a truly sparkling performance. This one just happens to be on the better end of the "really good"...by no means in the upper echelon of the "BEST"
