2001-11-16 - Oakland, California - Oakland Coliseum Arena

setlist

Performance notes: A fan is brought on stage to play guitar and begins strumming A Sort Of Homecoming. U2 go along with it, despite the fact Bono struggles to remember the lyrics. This is the last time A Sort Of Homecoming has been performed. It is also the last time Slow Dancing has been performed. Later in the set, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani joins U2 for the fourth show in a row to sing What's Going On.

Performance

Very good performance...the band seems to be very in touch with the crowd, from what I can gather. Bono even pulls a fan up onstage at one point, and he plays the notes to "A Sort of Homecoming", which the band goes along with, though some of the lyrics seem to be forgotten, and Edge plays around with the guitar part, as this is clearly unrehearsed. A real treat though!

Sound

Sometimes breached a 4, but mainly just a solid 3.5 all the way around. I've been more impressed with shows like 2001-05-16 (Chicago) and 2001-11-23 (Phoenix)

Audience

By FAR the best part of this show. It's really just a fairly standard Elevation show, because I've heard a ton of them, being a heavy listener, but this audience really shines. I don't know if its just because of the mix of band/crowd or if they were really just spectacular, but I also don't care- my favorite part of this boot.

Overall

This is a somewhat more experienced rating, if I can say that without sounding cocky. I've listened to quite a few Elevation Tour shows, and this falls right in the very middle in terms of greatness. There's not much to dislike, but nothing jumps out either. I have several highlights, but nothing that pushes this show onto any immediate favorites-lists for me. Download if you're an enthusiast or if this is a hometown gig, but otherwise, skip it and find something truly spectacular.

Highlights:

-Elevation
-Until the End of the World
-A Sort of Homecoming
-Sill Haven't Found>Three Little Birds>Pride (works really well in my opinion)
