Performance

In short, lethargic and laboured. This wasn't helped by the fact that Bono's voice was clearly strained on the night. Maybe they didn't come across as such live because the Italian crowd were really great. In fact, although they were the culprit sound-wise in this recording, they were very much the show's saving grace. On repeated listenings I felt they carried U2 through this performance. It was the only Italian show during the tour which probably helped.

Perhaps the perfect demonstration of how the boys were not 'switched on' was the very slow start. It just sounded like they were just plodding along going through the motions with no real energy or intensity.

Things picked up albeit momentarily from I Will Follow to Desire when some of the passion and enthusiasm we all love heightened somewhat, but then it fell away almost as quickly.

Even some of Elevation's usual high-spots just didn't excite me at all. I refer to Bad/40---->Psalm116/Where The Streets Have No Name and The Fly. The latter was the best thing to come out of the tour but here it was just a bit of nothing (although Bono did use a variation of my favorite Elevation Fly intro - the 'Light and Motion' one.) There was just no ooomph (that's a technical term ).

Highlights (very few to speak of):

* Some subtle, small things stood out in my mind e.g. "Jesus, this is Judas!" at the start of Until The End Of The World, the New York, New York snippet was cheeky, there was a nice keyboard bit during Walk On, the Gloria snippets were interesting and I enjoyed Bono speaking Italian at various stages (yes, this was a highlight!).

* I Will Follow was played with its usual gusto and was a good attempt at lifting the energy of an otherwise lackluster performance.

* Out Of Control for it's spontaneity at the end, although Bono fluffed the start. This is what needs to occur more often. A tribute to their loyal fans in the middle of the song was also a nice touch.

Sound

Probably worth its 3-star rating here. My number one bug bear was the audience. I realise it's an audience recording but they were too audible in too many parts of the show. While I much prefer an excellent audience recording over a soundboard, instances where I could clearly hear audience members singing, excuse me, yelling in my ear occurred all too frequently. No real penetration from Larry and there was some distortion towards the end of Beautiful Day.
Recording: "Losing Control In Turino" - 3.5 stars

Audience

Great audience. Sang along to every word and showed great spirit. Just a shame the taper couldn't isolate himself fro those around him

Overall

I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed. I listened to it several times and just couldn't get into it. I prefer Jeremy's Elevation selection from a few BRT's back - the Portland one - for its diverse setlist and all round energy. 6.5/10.
