U2's concert in St Louis today has been CANCELLED

U2 were meant to perform in St Louis today, but as a result of protests in the city the concert has been CANCELLED.

The protests have broken out after a white police officer, Jason Stockley, was acquitted of murder for the 2011 killing of black motorist Anthony Lamar Smith. Initially peaceful, the protests turned violent overnight and police and protesters have sustained injuries.

As a result of the protests, there are insufficient police and crowd control personnel available to enable a large stadium concert to proceed safely. Live Nation and U2 have confirmed the show is cancelled. There is no mention of a rescheduled date; this appears to be a cancellation, not a postponement.

Concertgoers who purchased tickets online will receive a refund on the credit card used to purchase the ticket; those who purchased via other methods can claim a refund at point of purchase from 10am Monday.

The last time U2 cancelled a concert was 29 May 1997 in Raleigh, North Carolina, after the large screen sustained damage that could not be repaired before showtime. The most recent postponements occurred in 2015 when they had to defer three gigs: one in Stockholm after a security breach and two in Paris after the Bataclan terrorist attack.

The next U2 concert will now be in Phoenix on 19 September.
