Performance:
I was at this concert on THE rock stadium of Holland: Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam, a.k.a. De Kuip. In retrospective, I can say that the band at the Popmart were really passionate, at their most 'U2-ish' innovative, rebeling, mind tickling and hard rocking. The tours since Popmart, Elevation and Vertigo, they seemed really going through the motions, programmed and the 'holy fire' seemed to be disappeared.
However, Rotterdam 1997 were the first gigs on European ground and the band really nailed these both shows. As can be seen on the dvd of July 18th (first Rotterdam show). The new Pop songs have never sounded better. At that time I was mostly impressed by Mofo, Please and Velvet Dress, but now listening to the bootleg I'm really struck by Miami, what a blast of a song, IMO the most defining Popmart-song.
And the show was astonishing and over the top, loved it. The entrance of the band through the crowd, the football-kick move of Bono when the crowd sings the Dutch traditional ole, ole. Improvising Whole Lotta Love (complete song!), the great great great triple of Bullet The Blue Sky-Please-Where The Streets Have No Name, magnificent
Audience:
The crowd was unbelievable, the band was really lifted by the people, who had been waiting four years for the overruling step of ZooTV and that was wthat they got from the band.
The at Popmart traditional karaoke part featured Dutch proud Golden Earring's Radar Love. Clearly, Edge didn't know the song properly and was completely overwhelmed by the loudness the crowd yelled the lyrics to the song, it was great and can be perfectly heard on the bootleg.
Hilarious is also the moment when the drumsol in Radar Love comes in, Edge: "Hold on, no drum solo's at U2 shows" and the band kicks immediately in 'Miami'. Neat.
Sound:
The sound is very good, hard bass, I like that. It almost sounds like a proffesional recording.
Overall:
high:
the last show/tour where U2 were really U2
low:
the last show/tour where U2 were really U2
